Nothing on this page is a recommendation to buy any financial product. The book is educational. Before acting on anything in it, speak with a licensed Financial Security Advisor, an accountant who understands how participating whole life insurance interacts with Canadian tax rules, and a legal advisor.
What is in the book
Four parts and twelve chapters, written to be read front to back. Part One defines the problem, where money actually goes, the four roles in any financing arrangement, and the cost of only ever performing two of them. Part Two sets out the idea itself, the multi-use dollar, the fifty-two benefits with their conditions attached, and a chapter devoted to who the strategy does not suit. Part Three examines the vehicle: what a participating whole life contract is, how it is structured, and the discipline required to operate it. Part Four covers what a proper illustration shows and which questions to ask.
The back matter is written to be used rather than skipped, frequently asked questions, a glossary of the Canadian terminology, recommended reading, and the complete disclosure.
Who it is written for
Canadians who want to understand this strategy properly before deciding anything, and who would rather read an honest account of the limits than a persuasive one about the advantages. It assumes no background in insurance or tax. It does assume you would prefer to be told when something will not work.
It is equally useful to readers who conclude the strategy is not for them. Chapter 8 exists for exactly that purpose, and a reader who closes the book having ruled it out has been served properly.
Why a Canadian edition exists
Almost all the literature on this subject was written for the United States, where the tax and regulatory framework differs materially. Canada has no estate tax but applies deemed disposition at death. The exempt test under the Income Tax Act regulations has no identical American counterpart. Policy loans interact with adjusted cost basis under section 148 rather than the U.S. provisions. Insurance is regulated provincially, and licensing titles differ from province to province.
Applied unchanged to a Canadian situation, American material produces advice that is confident and quietly wrong. Every mechanism, figure and caveat in this book follows Canadian legislation.
