The economist and financial philosopher who changed the way thousands of families think about money, savings, and lenders.
Who was R. Nelson Nash?
R. Nelson Nash (1931–2019) was an American economist, financial consultant, and author who developed the Infinite Banking Concept® and formalized it in his foundational book Becoming Your Own Banker®, published in 2000. He founded the Nelson Nash Institute to train and certify Authorized IBC Practitioners worldwide.
Nelson Nash spent most of his career studying the interactions between individuals, financial institutions, and economic forces. He was deeply convinced that most people unknowingly surrender a considerable portion of their wealth to financial institutions — primarily through interest paid on loans and opportunity funds abandoned on savings.
Nash summarized this observation in one of his most quoted formulations: "You finance everything you buy. You either pay interest to someone else or you give up the interest you could have earned." This seemingly simple observation is the philosophical foundation of his entire body of thought.
How did Nash develop the Infinite Banking Concept?
Nash developed the IBC in the 1980s after discovering, through his own financial difficulties, how participating whole life insurance policies issued by mutual insurance companies could replace the functions of a lender in his personal financial life. He spent the following two decades refining the concept and teaching it before formalizing it in Becoming Your Own Banker®.
Nash was not an insurance salesperson. He was an economic thinker who used whole life insurance as a vehicle to express a broader principle: that individuals can reclaim control of the capital-flow function in their lives. His book is intentionally short and dense — it does not sell a product, it transmits a philosophy. He insisted that Infinite Financial Sovereignty™ is a process, not a product. Owning a whole life policy does not make you an IBC practitioner. Understanding and systematically applying the financing and repayment process over decades — that is what makes the difference.
The Nelson Nash Institute and the Authorized IBC Practitioner™ designation
Nash founded the Nelson Nash Institute to train, certify, and support Authorized IBC Practitioners™ (Authorized IBC Practitioner™) worldwide. This designation attests that the practitioner has received specialized training on the IBC methodology — but like any professional designation, it must be complemented by years of practical experience.
In Canada, Authorized IBC Practitioners™ must also be Financial Security Advisors (F.S.A.) licensed by their provincial regulatory authority. The IBC designation alone does not confer the right to advise on insurance products — the provincial licence does. Both are necessary.
Nash's legacy in Canada
Nash's work crossed borders and the concept found a particularly rich application in Canada, where participating whole life insurance policies issued by Canadian mutual insurance companies offer a legal and tax framework distinct from the American framework, yet compatible with the foundational principles of the IBC.
Nelson Nash passed away in March 2019 at the age of 87. His book Becoming Your Own Banker® remains the primary reference for anyone wishing to understand Infinite Financial Sovereignty™ at its source. Jose Salloum recommends that all his clients read this book — at least once, ideally twice — before implementing the strategy. Then to get Infinite Financial Sovereignty™, Simplified to understand how these principles apply specifically to the Canadian context.

Questions about Nelson Nash and IBC
Becoming Your Own Banker® (2000) is the foundational text. It is available through the Nelson Nash Institute. Jose Salloum recommends reading it at least twice before implementing the strategy.
Yes. The Nelson Nash Institute offers the Authorized IBC Practitioner™ designation to professionals in several countries, including Canada. Canadian certified practitioners must also hold a provincial life insurance licence (F.S.A. in Quebec).
The foundational principles — recapturing the capital-flow function, treating money as a circular flow, maintaining uninterrupted growth — are universal. But Canadian tax and regulatory specifics (ITA, provincial insurance rules, CDA) differ from the American framework. This is why a specifically Canadian guide, like Infinite Financial Sovereignty™, Simplified, is indispensable.
