Infinite Banking in Thunder Bay
Thunder Bay is closer to Winnipeg than to Toronto. Distance changes who is convenient to deal with, and readers here often accept a narrower choice than they actually have.
The head of the lakes
Thunder Bay sits at the head of Lake Superior, formed in 1970 when Port Arthur and Fort William amalgamated, and the two old downtowns are still distinct. The Sleeping Giant lies across the bay in Sibley Provincial Park, the grain elevators on the waterfront recall a century as the eastern end of the prairie grain route, and Fort William Historical Park reconstructs the fur trade post. Lakehead University and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre anchor a large education and health sector.
What matters financially is not the geography but what the geography does to choice.
Distance narrows the advisor, not the options
This is the page's central point and it is worth stating plainly, because it is the thing most easily got wrong here.
The contract available to you is the same contract available in Toronto. The Income Tax Act is federal, so the exempt policy test, the adjusted cost basis treatment under section 148 and the tax consequences of a disposition are identical everywhere in Canada. Insurance regulation is provincial, so what governs you is Ontario law, exactly as it is in Ottawa.
What distance actually changes is how many licensed people are within driving distance, and that is a smaller constraint than it feels. An advisor can serve you remotely provided they are licensed in Ontario. Verification takes a minute in the public register. A reader here who accepts the first practitioner who appears, because they are the only one nearby, is accepting a narrower choice than the law imposes.
The corollary is worth saying too. Proximity is not competence, and neither is remoteness. Ask the same questions you would ask anywhere: how the person is paid, what a refusal looks like, and whether they have handled a situation like yours.
Two local income patterns
If you hold a workplace pension, from the hospital, the university, a school board or the provincial or municipal government, half the usual argument does not apply: a defined benefit plan already provides an income that does not run out and does not depend on markets. What remains is access, because a pension is not collateral, and the survivor question, which depends on reading your own plan.
If your income moves with forestry, mining exploration, transport or the shipping season, the retirement argument applies more fully but the risk profile is the one this strategy handles worst. Size the base premium against your worst plausible year and put strong-year capacity into paid-up additions, because in most contracts the base premium is the binding obligation and additional deposits are the flexible part. Ask specifically how the contract treats a skipped additional deposit versus a skipped base premium, because the answers usually differ.
Chapter 8 exists to help you rule this out as readily as rule it in.
The bookWho wrote it, and how to verify himA caution particular to a smaller market
Where few practitioners operate, a reader has less opportunity to compare and more difficulty recognising an unusual presentation as unusual. Two safeguards cost nothing.
Ask for the illustration and read the guaranteed column on its own before anything else. And ask what a refusal looks like: a practitioner who cannot describe a situation in which they would advise you against this is not assessing, they are selling. Both questions work the same at a distance as they do across a desk.
Ontario rules and where it does not fit
Insurance in Ontario is supervised by the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario, and a professional here holds the licence of a Life and Accident & Sickness Insurance Agent. Under the Financial Professionals Title Protection Act nobody may use the title Financial Planner or Financial Advisor without an approved credential, and a life insurance licence alone qualifies for neither.
Cash surrender value is typically below cumulative premiums for many years and commonly for more than a decade, so an early exit is a loss. A household early in a mortgage, without an emergency reserve, or carrying high-interest consumer debt should deal with those first. Nothing on this page is advice. No assessment has been made of anyone reading it, and the author is not a neutral party: he is licensed to sell the contracts this strategy uses and is paid a commission when one is placed. If your income follows a season, bring three years of it rather than one good year.
